“If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.”
—George McFly in Back to the Future
“You’re late! Do you have no concept of time?”
—Emmett “Doc” Brown in Back to the Future
“I’m your density. I mean, your destiny.”
—George McFly in Back to the Future
If you haven’t seen the “Back to the Future” series, I won’t ruin the ending for you, but . . . George McFly (Marty’s father) becomes a published author. (No wonder this is my #1 favorite movie.) Early in the movie George clearly lacks confidence. Yet after Marty helps his dad get up the nerve to ask out his future mom, and stand up to Biff (his nemesis) it changes the trajectory of his life. The second quote from Doc makes me laugh because those of us who are the creative-inventor types don’t have any concept of time for a number of reasons. First of all, the right side of our brain (where ideas come from) is unawarde of time. Secondly, when we are in the zone, time passes without us realizing it. Finally, we don’t conform to a clock. We do what we want, when we want–as long as we can find a job that is okay with that. The last quote, to me, is the best one of all. In the movie, Jerry McGuire, the classic line is, “You had me at hello.” When I first saw my wife I just knew. I turned to my co-worker and said, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry.” I don’t know how I knew, but I just did. It’s been 26 years since that moment, and it’s been a fantastic 26 years.
